Statement of Support

Companion House is deeply shocked and saddened by the white supremacist terrorist attack that resulted in the tragic death of at least 50  innocent people, all of Islamic faith, in Christchurch on 15.3.19.

The fact that the attack took place in places of worship as people prayed compounds the horror of this violence.

We offer our deep sympathy and condolence to all people affected in the Christchurch community.

In the aftermath of this horror, Canberra residents have been placing flowers and messages of sympathy at Canberra mosques.

Companion House stands in sympathy and solidarity with Canberra Muslim communities, alongside the Canberra community at large.

We echo the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern  in saying that  we value diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those who share our values, refuge for those who need it. As the Prime Minister said ” those values, I can assure you, will not, and cannot, be shaken by this attack”.
